Five Makeup Products You Need to Try This Autumn

After months of minimal makeup over the summer, I’m finally cracking out my eyeshadow palettes and lipsticks again. Here are five products in my stash that have really been helping me refresh my looks this season.

The burgundy smokey eye.

I know it’s very on-trend to go for bright orange and copper on the eyes at this time of year, but I personally prefer burgundy shades over autumn. Basically, I want the exact shade of mulled wine on my eyelids. One of my favourite eyeshadow palettes for creating this look is the Maybelline Burgundy Bar Palette* (review here). It’s got some of the most beautiful shimmer shades I’ve ever seen in the drugstore. Unfortunately, there are only two matte shades. I like to mix this with other palettes like the Revolution Ultra Flawless Matte Palette* or the I Heart Revolution Nudes Chocolate Palette* to get a bit more variety.

Eyeliner (that isn’t black).

Don’t get me wrong, black eyeliner will look incredible with mulberry eyeshadow – but I’ve been going for something a little bit different this season. I picked up the Max Factor Colour X-Pert Waterproof Eyeliner in 03 Metallic Lilac* recently and it is beautiful. Don’t pay attention to the shade name as it isn’t lilac at all; it’s more of a sparkly purple with a teeny bit of blue reflect. I love the easy-peasy applicator that I can throw on in one swipe, so it’s great for days when I’m too lazy to clean my angled brushes. And did I mention it lasts all day? Seriously, it can survive anything – a full day in the office, a hurricane, an emotional breakdown, you name it.

A flush of colour.

I love finishing off berry-toned eye looks with a berry-toned blush. In autumn, I prefer using cream products on my base to keep everything looking as glowy as possible. Right now I’m reaching for the elf Monochromatic Multi Stick in Sparkling Rose*. Lately I’ve been applying this after powder for a bolder colour, and blending everything in with my Real Techniques Expert Face Brush*. (Yup, most cream products blend out fine over powder, you’re welcome.)

A soft brown lipstick.

I’m still loving the same nude shades I was wearing all summer, but I’ve switched up the formula. Instead of a sheer gloss I’m using opaque lipsticks for more impact. My current favourite is the UCANBE Moisturising Lipstick in 04 Salon Latte*, a beautiful creamy brown shade that will flatter most skintones. It feels lovely and moisturising on the lips, and is neutral enough to compliment any eye look.

The finishing touches.

You can crack out your berry nail polish if you really want to; but I’m telling you, it’s so much easier to just get a pack of falsies. There’s no phaffing about with base coats and top coats and waiting half an hour before moving to make sure your nails are completley dry. You can grab some false nails for £1 next time you’re in Primark, but my advice is to splash out on some decent nail glue. I love the Superdrug Finishing Touches Brush On Nail Glue*, as it has an easy brush-on applicator for zero mess.
