Favourite Products of the Month: August 2019

I know I’m going to get a bit of flack for this, but I’m thrilled that it’s the end of summer.

Autumn is definitely my favourite season. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to be able to wear a dress once in a while; but I’m generally much happier wrapped up in my winter coats. I’m really looking forward to drinking hot chocolate and cosy evenings sat by the fireplace, but honestly… at this point, the thing I’m most excited about is being able to wear makeup without it sliding down my damn face.

Like my previous favourites post, it’s been a bit too hot for me to experiment with my routine this month; so my “looks” have been pretty basic. But there have still been a few gems in my makeup bag over the last month.

A minimal, matte base.

I have dry skin and usually avoid a matte finish; but I’ve recently discovered that I can get away with it, as long as I use less product. I’ve been skipping foundation entirely, and dabbing a bit of the Revolution Conceal & Define Concealer in C0.7* (review here) around my face instead. I’ve also been using this concealer as an eye primer recently. It’s the only thing that seems to cover the redness on my lids, but is still matte enough for shadows to easily blend on top.

If I still need a bit of coverage when I’m setting my face, I’ll add a very light dusting of the Revolution Pro Powder Foundation in F2*. I tend to use this sparingly, only in the areas where I need it, or things can get a bit cakey. But once I got the hang of it, it became a staple in my everyday makeup routine.

Attempting to disguise my lack of sleep.

My sleep pattern has gone completley out the window this month; so when I’ve had the energy to do my makeup, I’ve been doing my best to brighten up my eyes. I learned a long time ago that the whole “using concealer two shades lighter and painting a triangle under the eyes” thing just does not work for me. Something like the Collection Illuminating Touch Concealer in Naked 1* is much better. It’s a little dark and a leans rather pink, which counteracts the blue tones under my eyes really well. Think of it as a concealer mixed with a colour corrector.

While the rest of my base has been quite matte in an attempt to stop it melting in the sun, I’ve been keeping my under-eyes a little more radiant and setting them with the Revolution Pro Skin Finish Powder in Luminescence*. This highlighter/setting-powder hybrid is perfect for dry skin or areas you want to brighten.

A mascara that costs £1.20.

If you saw my recent video testing Aliexpress makeup, you might remember I was very pleasantly suprised by the Pudaier Mascara* I tried. (I was a little concerned by the smell when I first opened it, but that’s completley faded now and I’ve had zero reactions to it.) For someone with short, straight, and sparse lashes; the brush and formula are spot on. There’s some teeny tiny little fibers in there that give you serious length, but it’s still really defining as well, and the brush doesn’t pick up too much product and end up looking clumpy. Ever since I first tried it I’ve been reaching for this over my beloved Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara* – and that says a lot!

Lighter fragrances that won’t overpower.

I’ve always loved body mists – they’re perfect for layering with perfume to create a unique scent, or for wearing alone over the warmer months. I tried out the Superdrug Layering Lab Body Mist in Exotic* this month and fell in love immediatley. These body mists are designed to be mixed together, meaning they’re all fairly lightweight and perfect for summer. That being said, I’m very impressed by how noticeable this one is, and it lasts pretty well. I have a theory that it must be the jasmine notes – I’ve always been a sucker for jasmine, and I’ve noticed it tends to linger on me a bit longer than other scents.

What have you been loving this month? Let me know in the comments!
